  • Crocodoc is a tool that allows annotations on online assignment submissions in Canvas. If Crocodoc has been enabled for your institution, you can use Crocodoc for assignments. You can also use Crocodoc when viewing annotated feedback on assignment submissions.

When you open a submission, Crocodoc will automatically save any annotations made to the submission file for one hour. You can restart a Crocodoc session at any time by refreshing the submission page. To help you avoid losing work, Canvas will generate a session expiration warning after 50 minutes.

Some browsers may not initially render comments correctly when viewing feedback. If your browser includes a built-in PDF viewer, select the option to view the PDF in the system viewer. You can also download PDF files with comments to view on your computer. The settings required to view or print the annotations in the PDF vary based on the software installed on your computer.

    Compatible Crocodoc Files

If a submission includes a file that can be rendered in Crocodoc, but the submission preview is not complete, Canvas will generate a message stating the document is still processing.

If a file is submitted that is not compatible with Crocodoc, the Canvas document previewer will still display the file, but Crocodoc markup and commenting will not be available.

Canvas currently supports .doc/.docx, .ppt/.pptx, and .pdf Crocodoc file formats.

    • Crocodoc is not available in the Canvas beta environment, so Crocodoc documents will never be rendered.
    • Files over 100 MB and password-protected files will not be converted by Crocodoc.
    • Crocodoc annotations can be viewed in the Canvas by Instructure app.
    • Crocodoc annotations cannot be viewed by screen readers; for users with accessibility concerns, please leave feedback in the assignment's comments sidebar.
    • Crocodoc has limitations when used in Firefox. To avoid losing any annotations, click the screen before navigating away from the page, or choose another browser.

  • Your instructor may include a rubric as part of a graded discussion. The rubric is a set of criteria that your instructor will use to grade your discussion. Before submitting your discussion, you can use the rubric to evaluate your own work and make sure your discussion fulfills your instructor's requirements.

Note: Not all graded discussions may include a rubric.

  • You can view a course the same way that your students view your course through Student View. Enabling Student View creates a Test Student in your course. You can activate Student View in your Course Settings.

To see the student's perspective on Canvas, use Student View to view the course, post and reply to discussions, submit assignments, view grades, view people, view pages, view the syllabus, view quizzes, view the calendar, and view the scheduler (if enabled).

Attendance, conferences, conversations, collaborations, differentiated assignments, groups, peer reviews, and profiles do not work for the Test Student. You will see only what you, as the instructor, allow your students to see.

    • Each Canvas course has a separate Test Student account. Whenever you move to a new course you will need to enable Student View for that course.
    • Submissions and scores for the Test Student do not affect course analytics.
    • You can only view the course layout as it is seen by your students. You cannot view student-specific information, such as conversations between students.
    • Once you activate Student View, the Test Student is shown at the end of the Gradebook and is automatically added to every section in your course. If you want to remove the test student completely, you will have to remove the test student from your section enrollments.
  • If your institution has enabled Google Docs or Google Drive as a submission type, you can upload a file from Google Drive for an assignment. Unlike other assignment submissions, files from Google Drive are not uploaded into your Canvas user files.

Canvas accepts Google Doc, Google Sheet, and Google Slide files. You can also upload any uploaded Word (.doc/.docx), Excel (.xls/.xlsx), PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx), and PDF files not converted to Google Docs formatting.

    • If the Google Docs or Google Drive tab is not available in your submission, your institution has not enabled this feature.
    • If your course displays a link to your Google Drive in the Course Navigation Menu, your course has enabled Google Drive directly. Otherwise, you must enable Google Drive a web service in your user profile to upload Google Drive files.
    • In Google Drive assignments, you can only submit one file for your submission.
    • When Google Drive files (docs, sheets, and slides) are uploaded as a submission, the files convert to their Microsoft counterpart file types and appear in the submission as respective Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files. This conversion essentially preserves the submission in its current state; any changes made to the file in Google Drive will not be updated in the submission.

  • You can add a rubric to a graded discussion to help students understand expectations for the discussion and how you intend to score their replies. Occasionally, rubrics are added to assignments when you have an outcome inside of the rubric that you would like to use for alignment purposes. In addition to graded discussions, rubrics can also be added to assignments and quizzes.

Rubrics can be added by finding an existing rubric in one of your courses, or by creating a new rubric.

    Wat is de waarnemersrol?

In Canvas, the Observer role can be used to enroll parents, mentors, and guests who would like to participate in a Canvas course but do not need to earn course credit. Observers have limited permissions that allow them to see what is going on in a course without interrupting the flow of daily course communication. Like students, Observers cannot view a course until it is published and the course has started.

To learn more about the observer role, view the Parent Registration and Student Observation video.

Observers may be able to view assignments, course events, and grades for a student in the Canvas Parent app.

  • You can easily reply to any discussion, threaded or focused. However, the reply process varies depending on the type of discussion.
